Hundreds of people flocked to the Qutub Complex in Mehrauli on Friday to enjoy a performance by Bollywood singer Sunidhi Chauhan. The concert marked the first day of the five-day Qutub Festival 2011 which was organized by the department of art, culture and languages, government of Delhi, and the Punjabi Academy.
Over the next five days, Bollywood singers Sonu Nigam, Sukhwinder Singh, KK, and Shreya Ghosal will also take the stage at the complex.
Although the festival has always been associated with Sufi music, it seems that the incorporation of more contemporary music has been appreciated as well. As people walked towards the venue, overlooking the iconic Qutub Minar, they hummed songs by the famous singer. Many went berserk with excitement on catching the first glimpse of Chauhan as she pulled into the grounds of the complex in a white Mercedes.
People occupied their seats well in time for the concert to begin. And with several rows at the front of the stage blocked exclusively for VIPs, it's a good thing that they did.
Before Chauhan finally came on stage, an hour after the scheduled time of 7pm, Abhijeet and Sanjeev, two music composers, performed a new number, Dilli Dil Hindustan Ka. Indian Idol season 5 finalist Rakesh Maini also sang a couple of songs after an instrumental music performance by a live band.
But it was only when Chauhan started singing her hit number, Crazy Kiya Re, that the crowd got revved up. They all stood up in applause, some on their chairs to get a better view and some who rushed to the front.
As she performed her popular numbers, such as Beedi, Ainwayi ainwayi, Desi girl, Sheila ki jawani, one after another, she interacted with the crowd and urged the audience to sing along. Most were only happy to oblige.
"I enjoy her songs a lot as they're upbeat and good to dance on. The weather and ambience are also perfect so I'm having a really great time," said engineering student Manish Kumar.
Ajit Singh, a class XII student, who was dancing in the lawns of the complex, also said he was having a blast. "I'm also looking forward to Sonu Nigam's performance tomorrow and will definitely attend that as well," he said.
