Getting married is a comforting feeling: Mohit Chauhan

One of the perks of marriage is that you have someone to share your thoughts with and someone to come back home to, says singer Mohit Chauhan who had a hush hush marriage with journalist Prarthana Gehlot in a quiet corner in Himachal Pradesh.

"I didn't take the plunge for a long time. Now I am glad I did. I now have someone to share my thoughts and my creative ideas with. Most importantly, I now have someone to come back home to in Mumbai," he said adding that he is planning a "receiption for friends".

Mohit tied the knot with Prarthana June 29 at a hotel in Barog, near Kasauli hills in Solan district, Himachal Pradesh. Born to Krishana Rana and B.K. Rana, the singer belongs to Nahan in Sirmaur district.

Now he is looking forward to new phase in his life as well as his new album.

"My wife is part of the album. The whole idea of doing a non-film album is to make it a personal statement," he said.

Excerpts from the interview:

Q: Why so secretive about your marriage?

A: (Laughs in embarrassment) I am here in my hometown in Himachal still going through the post wedding rituals. My wedding was a very private affair for close family only. I will now have a reception for friends in Mumbai or Delhi. As soon as I am back in Mumbai, I will take a call on the reception.

Q: Tell me about your wife.

A: Her name is Prarthana. So I've no choice but to be deeply religious in life (laughs). It an love-cum-arranged marriage. Prarthana and I have known each for some years. She was my friend, and then we thought we should take our friendship to another level.

Q: So you married your best friend?

A: Ha ha. Not quite. She was a friend. I liked spending time with her...The vibration between the two of us is wonderful. With Prarthana I felt she was not just a friend but also someone who contributed substantially to my singing.

Q: Do you feel more complete after marriage?
A: Getting married is definitely a very comforting feeling. I didn't take the plunge for a long time. Now I am glad I did. I now have someone to share my thoughts and my creative ideas with. Most importantly I now have someone to come back home to in Mumbai.

Q: Is Prarthana interested in music?

A:
She is interested in music. But she isn't a singer. She is a writer and journalist. But she loves music. And she is contributing in terms of ideas and lyrics to my songs in my new album which would be out soon.

Q: So did you go through all the rituals like a good boy?

A:
(laughs) Traditionally our Himachal weddings take a week. My marriage took two days. I return to Mumbai in some time. I've been getting calls asking where I am. I need to get back to work.

Q: Tell me about your new album?

A:
This would be my third solo album. There will be one song in the English language. I've also dedicated one song tomy roots in Himachal. I've composed all the tunes. My wife is part of the album. The whole idea of doing a non-film album is to make it a personal statement. A private album has to be about the artiste. It gives the musician complete freedom to say what I want to.

Q: Have you had anything comparable to "Rockstar" coming your way?

A:
That was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I am thankful to god I got it. No, I haven't got a similar offer. Yes, I am working with A.R. Rahman again. But for an opportunity like "Rockstar", I'll have to wait a while.a while.

Mohit Chauhan gears up for Second Marriage

Mohit Chauhan
Actor Mohit Chauhan has dealt with calls meant for his namesake — singer Mohit Chauhan — with a sporty attitude for a long time. In fact, a popular film website lists Mohit's upcoming movie in the singer Mohit's work profile.
But, the actor is unfazed and even laughs when asked about it. He says, "Our name has led to much confusion. I still get calls asking if I can sing and compose music for films. And I am sure he must be getting acting offers from filmmakers thinking it is me. I hope this confusion is put to rest once and for all."
For those still not familiar, Mohit made his acting debut with Rohit Shetty's Zameen. But it was the role of Shah Rukh Khan's best friend in Shimit Amin's Chak De! India that fetched him fame. Chauhan is currently looking forward to his next film Second Marriage Dot Com where he plays a single parent who gets married a second time. It was a challenge for the not-so-old Mohit to play a father to a mature guy and the husband to an elderly woman.
He says, "I felt shy, more so because we were all staying in the flat where we shot the film. For the first few days, I just kept reading my part. It was later while shooting that all of us became friendly. It felt like home then."
Shooting in Delhi on an extremely cold day is an experience from that Mohit says he will never forget. "The shoot was at night. It was quite cold and I was practically shivering. The good thing is that I had to be unconscious in the scene and that worked well for me in that weather," he concludes. Directed by Gaurav Panjwani and produced by Vin Mehta Films, Second Marriage Dot Com releases on August 10.

'Masakalli' singer doesn't see it as his ultimate destination

mohit chauhan
Singer Mohit Chauhan, former member of Indipop band Silk Route, has notched up his first solo hit of the year with "Masakalli", a song from Abhishek Bachchan's upcoming film "Delhi-6", but feels that Bollywood is not his ultimate destination.

"I don't think Bollywood is my ultimate destination, I believe it's a part of my journey. Today I sing songs in films, tomorrow I might collaborate with somebody else, it's all different colours and different hues of your artistic expression and without anything actually being a destination," Mohit told in an interview.

Mohit, who sang the hit "Dooba dooba" when he was a member of Silk Route, feels that although he has shifted from being a member of a musical band to mainstream playback singing, his move isn't a transition of any kind.

"I don't see my singing for films as a transition from singing my own songs because I see it as part of the same picture. For me music is for the soul - no matter whether the song is composed by me or by someone else," explained Mohit.

"When I sing I try to make the song my own and sing it my way because in my mind I am not following any school of thought. I just make myself free," he added.

When asked about the reason behind Silk Route disbanding, Mohit said: "When people are working together, sometimes there are creative differences and a difference of direction, which results in (people taking) separate ways."

Mohit began his stint in Bollywood with a few forgettable songs. It was with "Rang De Basanti" that his career got a boost with "Khoon chala" which was widely appreciated.

Post-"Rang..." his popularity rose with songs like "Tum se hi" from the hit film "Jab We Met" and "Masakalli" from Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's "Delhi-6".

"It really feels nice that people are liking the song so much," said the singer who was in New Delhi recently to flag off the musical parade, an initiative by 92.7 Big FM.

Mohit, who feels that he is fortunate to be working with a composer like A.R Rahman for the second time, said: "Rahman's music is great. As a person too when you speak to him and sit with him, you come to know that he is really stable and very rooted."

The singer-writer-composer who was missing from the non-film segment for quite some time will make his presence felt with a new album that is scheduled to release in a couple of months.

So what is his take on the fact that the market for non-film albums is shrinking with people becoming more Bollywood-centric?

"I don't think the listener or the audience has changed or become Bollywood-centric. If people loved 'Dooba dooba', they will still love a good song if offered to them. It's the economics that is a major concern. I think the music labels need to encourage artists so that more albums come out."

Mohit will be heard singing for Imtiaz Ali's new film, Rajesh Roshan's upcoming venture with his son Hrithik, and Deepti Naval's film among others.
